Orientation
The Hauptbahnhof (train station)
and the Altstadt are situated in the center of Munich. The city
itself is made up of a variety of districts, which in the past were
actually separate towns. The Isar passes through a portion of the
eastern district of Munich.
The Altstadt is the place where
visitors typically start their exploration of Munich. At the heart
of the Altstadt is the Marienplatz, a beautiful historic building.
Much of the area in the Altstadt is designated pedestrian only.
Throughout the area are numerous historic sites, pubs, cafes, and
countless shops. Just north of the Altstadt is the impressive Residenz,
former residence of the local royals. In the immediate area one
can also visit the National Theater and the Residenz Theater.
Further north lies the Odeonsplatz,
which today is home to the fantastic Theatinerkirche. Moving east
is the Platz Quarter which is home to some of the better pubs and
restaurants in the city. While in the area you cannot miss the Maximilianstrasse,
which is a fashionable street full of great shops.
For student life you need to
go to the area where Munich's university is located. Tons of students,
interesting cafes, live music, bookshops, and a youthful energy
permeate this area.
No matter where you go in Munich
you are bound to find something of interest.
