Orientation
Water is one of the defining characteristics of
Hamburg. People who don't know Hamburg associate the city with the
sea. While that is correct, three rivers, the Elbe, the Alster,
and the Bille play an important role in this city. Narrow canals
called Fleete run through extensive parts of the city. Interestingly
Hamburg has more bridges than Venice. The combination of sea, rivers
and lake contribute to an overall maritime feel to this stunning
city.
Numerous distinct neighborhoods make up Hamburg.
To the east of the Hauptbahnhof is the St. George Quarter. It is
an area well known for nice buildings and lovely green areas next
to streets. To the west of the city center lies the ever famous
St Pauli district well known for an abundance of entertainment options.
Heading north from St Pauli lies Schanzenviertel, a quarter catering
to the alternative scene.
The majority of Hamburg's most important sites
of interest are situated in and around the beautiful city center.
In addition to the tourist sites, the area is home to a wealth of
cafes, shops, restaurants and pubs. It is a great area to explore
on foot and mingle with the locals.
One great way to get to know this city is through
the use of a guided tour. These are not on some tourist bus. No
you can hire a private guide and for for a walk and learn about
historic events and interesting stories through the most beautiful
quarters in town.
