Münster Cathedral
The old Munster, a cathedral begun in the Romanesque
style in 1200 and completed in 1513 is a miracle of medieval craftsmanship.
It began as the burial church for the dukes of Zähringen. It
evokes wonder in all who visit and has been referred to as the most
beautiful cathedral in Christendom. It's a unique 380 ft high spire
of perforated red sandstone on the bustling market square that dominates
the old town.
The tower is adorned with rich sculptural ornamentation
and intricate designs depicting scenes from the old and new testaments
and the kaleidoscopic stained glass windows are truly dazzling.
The sturdy tower base gives way to an octagon, crowned the spire.
An ascent of the tower provides an excellent view of the Vosges
Mountains in France.
The rich interior bears witness to the generosity and civic pride
of local families. The high altar features a masterpiece triptych
of the coronation of the Virgin Mary by Hans Baldung.
