Orientation
Frankfurt is located on the Rhine
River, southwest of Bonn in a scenic valley between Hamburg and
the Alps. The river flows from east to west, dividing the northern
section of the city from the south. The loess and loam soils of
the Rhine main plain are cultivated extensively, and orchards and
vineyards flourish. The Rhine main plain is densely populated, and
Frankfurt, at its center, serves both as Germany's financial capital
and as a major European transportation hub. Across the river is
Schweitzer Strasse, the best area for up-market boutiques and cosmopolitan
restaurants.
To the north is the traditional
financial and business center and the southern section is the lovely
Sachsenhausen district full of the rustic charm of old Germany with
a much more relaxed atmosphere. Amidst the inner city's encircling
glass and metal, this lovely district represents a romantic past.
Here you will find small squares, fountains, numerous museums, taverns
and cozy restaurants. To the east is the Altstadt or the old town,
with lovely sidewalk cafes and historical buildings. The Hauptbahnhof
is on the western side of the city.
Bockenheim, a student area north
west of the city center is a cafe-laden, cosmopolitan district.
The airport is about 15 minutes by train south-west of the city
center.
One of Germany's best cultural
treasures is the Museumsufer an embankment that stretches between
the Friedensbrücke bridge in the west to Dreikönigskirche
church in the east. The strip holds thirteen of the city's museums,
all located in restored villas dating back to the 1800s
