Food and Drink
Being one of Germany's main urban
centers there are lots of choices for food and drink. You can find
some of the best thai, greek, italian and mexican food here. As
for drink, the city is a major beer producing center and is situated
besides several wine producing regions. The city's favourite beverage
is an apple wine best sampled at the taverns around Frankfurt along
with local specialties like Handkäse
mit Musik (cheese with music) and Frankfurter
Grüne Sosse (Frankfurt green sauce). The majority of
taverns are in Sachsenhausen which is filled with eateries and pubs.
In most of these you'll be served the apple cider in Bembel
jugs.
Handkäse mit Musik describes
a round cheese marinated in oil and vinegar with onions, served
with bread and butter. The 'music' part is what is generated upon
eating it. As one might imagine things can get pretty gassy.
Frankfurter Grüne Sosse
is made from parsley, sorrel, dill, burnet, borage, chervil and
chives mixed with yogurt, mayonnaise or sour cream; it's served
with potatoes and meat or eggs. Rippchen mit Sauerkraut (spare ribs)
and Frankfurter sausages and Ochsenbrust with green sauce, Zwiebelkuchen
(onion flan) and Frankfurter Kranz cake are some of the local favourites.
