Cultural activities for students, GLS - German Language school Berlin

AZ Berlin: Cultural Activities

Meeting staff and students from up to 60 nationalities
You will have lots of opportunities to socialize:

  • Join the weekly Happy Hour: Every Monday night the school invites all newcomers as well as "old" students for a free drink - depending on the time of year, there are between 30 and 70 students, who join the school every Monday in a bar nearby.
  • The seminars or films, that the school offers every Thursday afternoon, are free - if you come, you will meet students outside your own class as well.
  • The activities inside Berlin and the trips to other German cities are a perfect way to combine sightseeing and socializing.

Sightseeing in Berlin - several activities every week

Berlin has become a very trendy city - let us help you explore it! Our German immersion school offers a minimum of 3 after-class activities (in summer 6) per week in and around Berlin. These activities may include classical sightseeing as well as a night at a Berlin club offering free dance lessons - please see the sample below. The school guides who accompany you on our tours are included in the course price, what's not included are entrance fees and public transport. With the student ID you get reductions on both.

Excursions to other cities twice a month

Twice a month our German school in Berlin arranges excursions to other cities in Germany, and occasionally students also go to Prague. Depending on the destination these trips last one or 2 days, please check the schedule at school to see what is happening:

  • Hamburg, an elegant port city
  • Dresden, the Florence on river Elbe
  • Leipzig, boomtown in former socialist East
  • Dessau, city of the Bauhaus
  • Prague, capital of Czech republic

Sample week - how a week in Berlin may look like

Every Monday our guides present to you all activities and excursions, that they scheduled for the two weeks to come. In the sample week below, the commentary Activity means, that school guides are accompanying you. If you prefer to explore the city on your own and for days with no activity scheduled, school guides give suggestions of where to go and what to see.

Monday: Welcome
Monday Happy Hour
Evening get-together with school staff in a bar near the language school, for all continuing and recently arrived students

Tuesday: Activity with school guide
City walk to Scheunenviertel
The district around the New Synagogue in Oranienburger Strasse is famous as a center of Jewish life and recently has developed into one Berlin´s most fashionable districts with a very young and artistic crowd.

Wednesday: Suggestion
Boat Trip on River Spree
Berlin is full of rivers and canals and most of the historical monuments in the old city´s center such as Pergamon Museum, Dome and Tiergarten can be reached by boat.

Thursday: Seminar or Activity with school guide
Checkpoint Charly
If you don´t feel like coming to the Thursday seminars on film or culture, you have a second option: A museum at Friedrichstrasse, the former border crossing between East and West, recounts the history of the Berlin Wall and the histories of those, who tried to flee from the former GDR.

Friday: Activity with school guide
Berlin by night
Out on the town with our guides, e.g. in Friedrichshain, the youngest and trendiest of downtown´s three main scenes

Saturday: Suggestion or Activity
Free day for activities on your own or...
a full-day guided excursion to Lake Wannsee, Potsdam or Sachsenhausen. Possibly a longer excursion to Hamburg or Prague

Sunday: Suggestion or Activity
Bicycle Tour along Lake Wannsee (bicycle rental at German school)
Berliners went swimming in Wannsee already around the turn of the century and the lake offers more than beautiful beaches and clear blue water: Right next there is Glienecker Bruecke, the famous bridge used for exchange of spies during the cold war.
