Sites of Interest
The
Hotel du Palais is a land mark of Biarritz and is worth
visiting even if you are not a guest. Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon
III, built an elegant resort on the beach in 1854 bringing Biarritz
to fame. The resort was frequently visited by European royalty such
as Queen Victoria, Edward VII and Alfonso XIII of Spain. It is now
converted into a hotel for tourists.
The
Biarritz Surf Festival takes place every
year in July on the beach at the Côte des Basques. It attracts
more than 150,000 spectators and surfers from all over the world
including Hawaii, California and Australia.
Asiatica
Museum is home to a fantastic collection of Asian art
primarily from India, Nepal, Tibet, and China with pieces that are
over a thousands years old. The Museum of the Sea is another tourist
attraction that has 24 aquariums containing many of the species
of sea creatures indigenous to the area, including impressive sharks
and seals. The 12th century St-Martin's Church
and the 19th century Russian Orthodox Church are historic landmarks
that are worth visiting. The Rocher de la Vierge
or Rock of the Virgin is an impressive rock island with a statue
of the Virgin crowning it. The small island is connected by a bridge
to walk over to the island.
