Cathedral Saint Gatien:
The spectacular Saint Gatien
Cathedral was built in Gothic style started in the 13th century
and completed in the 16th century. The cathedral with its imposing
twin towers, dominates the old city. The interior is strikingly
beautiful with its stained glass masterpieces, rose windows, jewels,
beautiful chorus and elegant renaissance spiral staircase.
Museum of the Arts Schools:
Within
the beautiful gardens of the 17th century Archbishop’s Palace
is the museum of the arts schools. It houses a fine collection of
French and foreign paintings and furniture from the middle ages.
There are two notable altarpieces, 'The Resurrection' and 'Christ
in the Olive Grove' by Andrea Mantegna. Works of other artists like
Rubens, Rembrandt, Boucher, Delacroix and Degas are also on display.
Basilique Saint Martin Area
The new basilica of St Martin
is an extravagant, pseudo-Byzantine church erected between 1886
and 1924. Two towers and a Renaissance cloister are the chief remains
of the celebrated old basilica of St Martin built mainly during
the 12th and 13th centuries and demolished in 1802. It stood on
the site of an earlier and very famous church built from 466 to
472 by bishop St Perpetuus and destroyed together with many other
churches in a fire in 998.
Gouin Hotel
Formerly a private mansion of
a silk merchant, the 16th-century Hotel Gouin boasts an impressive
Renaissance facade and a Romeo-and-Juliet balcony. It houses a museum
with collections including Gallo-Roman and medieval archaeology
plus medieval, Renaissance and 17th-18th century arts.
