Musée des Beaux-Arts
A part of the 17th century Archbishop’s
Palace is now used as the museum of fine arts. It houses a fine
collection of French and foreign paintings and furniture from the
middle ages. There are two notable altarpieces, 'The Resurrection'
and 'Christ in the Olive Grove' by Andrea Mantegna. Works of other
artists like Rubens, Rembrandt, Boucher, Delacroix and Degas are
also on display.
Musée du Compagnonnage
This is a unique museum displaying
masterpieces, tools, illustrated and written records of traveling
craftsmen called compagnons. Most of the artifacts and products
displayed are handcrafted or made with traditional tools and methods.
The products are from different trades including pottery, stone
and metal works, carpentry and clog making.
Musée des Vins de Touraine
This is a wine museum illustrating
the process of wine making from that region. It is located in the
vaults of the 13th century Eglise St. Julien. On display are the
various wine making tools and the traditions associated with it.
The museum does not offer wine samples.
Musée du Gemmail
A complete collection of paintings
illustrates the technique 'gemmail'. This technique was first conceived
in 1936 by the painter Jean Crotti and the Physician Emmanuel Malherbe.
It consists of pieces of colored glass embedded in enamel and lit
from behind.
