Église de la Madeleine
The Church, , was begun in
1764 by Constant d'lvry but only the foundation was completed
before the revolution began in 1789 and work was stopped until
1806. Emperor Napoleon I had the church built completed in the
style of a Greco-Roman temple as a tribute to his army. The church
has some splendid sculptures, paintings and views from the top.
Notre Dame
Notre-Dame Cathedral is the
most import and magnificent church in France. Its construction
started in 1163 and was completed in 1330 in classic French gothic
style. The towers are 69 meters high with a staircase leading
to the top providing a fantastic view of the city. The cathedral
has ornately carved portals and doorways decorated with rose and
stained glass supported by carved stone. The cathedral is capable
of accommodating 6000 worshipers. The church was vandalized during
the French revolution in the 18th century. The French architect
Viollet-le-Duc carried out extensive renovations of the cathedral
in the 19th century. The cathedral attracts millions of visitors
every year.
Sainte Chapelle
Built in 1246, Sainte-Chapelle
consists of two chapels one on top of the other. It housed some
holy relics, including what was claimed to be Jesus' crown of
thorns, for a short while before they were transferred to Notre-Dame.
It has a magnificently guilded 18th century gate. The stained-glass
windows, soars 50 feet high to a star-studded vaulted ceiling.
The chapelle haute is considered one of the highest achievements
of Gothic art.
Sacre-Coeur
The Basilica built in neo-byzantine
style is a landmark on top of Montmartre and can be seen from
all over the city. Designed by the architect Paul Abadie it was
started in the late 19th century and completed in the early 20th
century. It has a tower that rises to over 85 meters.
