Region of Brittany
The
region of Brittany is located on the western tip of France jutting
into the Atlantic. Its isolation from the rest of Spain has helped
it retain much of their culture, language and traditions. Known
to the Celts as Armorica or the land of the sea, Brittany has a
coastline of about 1100-km dotted with lighthouses, rocky coves
and megaliths rising from the sea. The magnificent beaches, modern
seaside resorts, fishing ports make the region a great attraction
and is overcrowded by tourists in summer. The southern coast is
calmer with milder climate and less crowded beaches.
Away
from the coasts you'll find countryside of rich pastures and moors
broken by little rivers and scattered with forests and charming
villages. Dinan, Vannes and the capital Rennes still have medieval
quarters with ruined castles, markets, farms, shops, and restaurants.
The western region is where the culture remains most evident. Quimper,
and in the Pays Bigouden, traditional costumes and Celtic music
are still a genuine part of the Breton lifestyle. Women dress in
traditional costumes with the typical Breton lace headdress called
"coiffe". With the excepting of Rennes, all the principal
large cities are on the coast. The principal economic resources
are agriculture, fishing, tourism and commerce through the shipyards.
