Sites of Interest
Jardin Public
Located in the center of Bordeaux,
this English-style public garden is know for its elegantly landscaped
gardens, pathways, lakes, and old trees. It is a perfect locatin
to have a picnic with the f amily. The garden includes the Jardin
Botanique founded in 1629, a museum of natural history and a children's
playground. .
Musée d' Art Contemporain
The Entrepôts Lainé,
built in 1824 as a warehouse for the rare and exotic products of
France's colonies (coffee, cocoa, peanuts, vanilla etc), now houses
the Museum of Contemporary Art, which has an entrance opposite 16
Rue Ferrère.
Esplanade des Quinconces
This is the largest square in
Europe. It was laid out in 1820 as a fountain monument for the assembly
deputies who fought during the French revolution. Bordering the
Garonne River, this plaza is definitley worth a visit.
Grand Théâtre
Area
The architect Victor Louis built
this grand hall in the 1770's and is a great example of the cities
neoclassical past. It resembles a Roman temple with statues of the
nine muses and three goddesses. The interior has been restored to
the original decor. Many performances are still held here.
Markets
Bordeaux has a whole range of
markets to choose from. Some of the main shopping areas are Rue
Porte Dijeaux, Cours de I'lntendance with a sting of boutiques and
Rue Sainte Catherine. Other markets include the Marché Capuçins,
which have fresh flowers and local delicacies, local caviar, cow
and goats cheeses and the locally made cakes soaked in rum. The
market also frequently hosts cultural events and shows.
Cathédrale Saint André
This imposing Romanesque cathedral
was rebuilt between the 12th and the 16th centuries and stands as
a prominent landmark. The restoration of this gothic masterpiece
began in the 19th century. Visitors are allowed to climb to the
top of the massive bell tower, which provides an awesome view of
the city
Museums
The Musée des Beaux-Arts
is a fine arts museum in Bordeaux that holds a permanent collection
of 17th-century Flemish, Dutch, and Italian works. It also hosts
exhibitions. The city of Bordeaux has about 15 other museums including
Museum of Aquitaine, Decorative Arts Museum, the Customs Museum,
the Bordeaux Wines Museum and Maison des Métiers de l'imprimerie,
the Printing Trade museum.
