Saint Sauveur Cathedral
Saint-Sauveur was built using
several different made up of several architectural features from
several different centruries. The building is made up of a Romanesque
cathedral, a Gothic church begun in 1285 and finished in 1513, chapels
from the end of the Middle Ages, a Christian baptistery and a Romanesque
cloister which are the remnants of older buildings. The cathedral
contains several works of art, such as the Aygusi altar, the triptych
of the Burning Bush by Nicolas Froment and Brussels tapestries and
carved panels from the beginning of the 16th century.
Markets
In Aix en Provence there are
many squares that play host to typical Provencal markets. Marche
aux herbs sells local fruits and vegetables, Marché floral
sells flowers and arrangements, Brûlerie Richelme specializes
in coffee, Confiserie Entrecasteaux is a candy and confrection store.
There are markets sell olives, goat cheese, lavender, garlic, honey,
rosemary and variousspices. You will also find book and antique
stors. Surrounding the different markets are great restaurants with
local favorites and authentic Provencal cuisine. .
Paul Cézanne Trail
This trail is a self-guided tour
that takes you through the life of Cézanne, a famous artist
from Aix-en-province. The tour includes his birthplace, his studio
where he produced his masterpieces and other details of his life.
Cézanne's last studio is now a museum that displays his personal
belongings, furniture, tools that he used and an unfinished painting
sitting on an easel.
Town Hall
The town hall is located in the oldest part of the city along with
other buildings like Place d'Albertas, Halle aux Grains. They form
wonderful examples of the cities rich heritage. The Musée
du Vieil Aix is a treasure of information on the local traditions,
customs and history of Aix.
