Transportation
Santo Domingo is a large city
of about 2 million inhabitants. Getting around the city however
is easy as there are abundant local transportation options.
Taxis
Taxis can be found throughout the city. By North American or European
standards they are very inexpensive. There does not seem to be
any one style or color used. However taxis typically have some
type of marking indicating that they are a taxi. Most do not have
any type of meter so negotiating a price is necessary. You will
want to do the BEFORE you get into the taxi, not after you arrive.
Check with the locals as to what the going rate is when traveling
somewhere.
Car
Rentals
Inside the city you really do not need to rent a car. They
are more trouble then they are worth, especially considereing
that taking a taxi is quicker, cheaper and easier when traveling
around the city.
If you feel the need to drive
in the Dominican Republic there are plenty of car rental agencies
to be found. Rental agencies can be found in larger cities and
and the nicer hotels. Be aware that the rates can be high. Make
sure you take out insurance since car theft is a problem, and
accidents do happen. A little bit of caution will help to make
sure your trips is safe and enjoyable.
Buses
Santo Domingo has a great bus system. The buses may not be in
the best of shape, but they are cheap and the go everywhere. Buses
run on all major streets and start early in the morning and run
fairly late.
Ground
Tours
If you are in a hurry and want to get a quick feel for the city
or the immediate area a ground tour can be a good idea. Check
with our school or a hotel and they can help you set up a tour.
Some tours are standard, while others can be customized.
Domestic
Flights
Air Santo Domingo is one of the largest local operators and has
regular flights between Santo Domingo and the other major towns
and cities in the country. Additionally there are charter companies
available as well for those who want to set up a customized trip.
