LEATHERBACK TURTLE NESTS
IN TAMARINDO, COSTA RICA
Tamarindo has two important
nesting spots for the leather back turtle that are extremely close
to the Spanish school. During key times in the year you can visit
Playa Grande or Playa Langosta, which are protected nesting areas
for the giant leatherback turtle. These areas are considered National
Parks in Costa Rica. Turtles are present from October to March
to lay their eggs.
Guided tours can be arranged in advance to experience
this important event in the life cycle of the Leather back turtle.
.Leatherbacks are a
species of turtle that have literally been around for millions
of years. Leatherback turtle bones have been found and dated back
to slightly over 100 million years. Today
this species is in peril, and a variety of organizations and governments
are working hard to prevent them from going extinct.
The leatherback turtle is a turtle on the move.
Each year these amazing turtles migrate hundreds of miles through
open oceans. Every 3-4 years, female turtles return to their nesting
spots along the Pacific coastline of Costa Rica to lay their precious
eggs.
