Sport Fishing

Quepos is world renowned for the quality of sportfishing found in the waters offshore. December is very popular as this is the season when large numbers of sailfish are moving in. It is very common to have days when up to 20 sailfish or marlin are caught and released!

The fishing for sailfish, and black, striped and blue marlin will run at least through the month of April If it is a great season action can continue on to the very early summer months.

Closer to shore the fishing is excellent as well. Some of the more common and popular species to fish for include: wahoo, jacks, dorado, tuna, mackeral, snook, and roosterfish. Typically the best areas for many of these fishes are close to the river mouths.

There are numerous outfits in Quepos offering a variety of different fishing packages. Some range from just a few hours to more extensive multi-day trips.

Fishing Seasons
The following fish and associated seasons may vary year to year. The information is only here to give you a general idea of what may be available.

Roosterfish - The best spots for this great sportfish tends to be close to the river mouths. Typically the summer months tend to be the best time for this fish.

Sailfish - December through the end of April. During these months the sailfish are heading north. Some years they start a little earlier and may hang around a little longer.

Dorado - When the rainy months start in early May is when the best action is to be had. Commonly found in close to shore near the mouths of rivers.

Wahoo - Not the most common fish in and around Quepos. Late in the summer they can be found, however you will need to head south towards places like Caños Island or Drake Bay.

Marlin - The best month is typically October. Depending on the season however September or November can be good months as well.

Snook - The heavy rainy season tends to be the best time to land these fish. They tend to congregate near the mouths of rivers. You can charter a boat or fish from shore for snook.

Tuna - The best months are from June through September, but this species can be found all year long in the waters off Quepos.
