Santo Domingo de Heredia
This is a small town situated
halfway between Heredia and San Jose. Many of the houses and building
have been restored to their former glory. The locals are pretty
friendly as well.
San Joaquin
This small
town is located just 3 miles from Heredia. It is a great place to
visit and have a very nice feel to it. Just to the north of the
town lie extensive coffee plantations, and slightly further to the
north rises the Barva volcano. This town tends to be fairly upscale
and is home to some nice nightlife options. If you are in
the area stop by the butterfly farm. The farm has an extensive collection
of native butterflies. Stroll through their gardens and you can
see numerous butterflies in the varies stages of their life cycle.
Monte de la Cruz Reserve
Costa Rica is famous for its
extensive national park system. What is less well known is the fact
that there are numerous private reserves as well. Just a short distance
north of San Rafael is the private reserve of Monte de la Cruz.
There is an extensive network of trails throughout the park. Hike
the trails and you have the opportunity to see fantastic plant and
animal life. Some trails lead to Braulio Carillo National Park,
and other offer excellent views of the surrounding valley.
Bosque Del Rio de la Hoja
Another private reserve area
is the Bosque del Rio de la Hoja. This forest area is popular as
a hiking destination. Additionally there are numerous recreational
facilities including soccer fields, a pool, a go cart track, plus
much more! Very popular with the locals on the weekends. Additionally
there is a nice typical Costa Rican restaurant nearby. Camping is
available.
San Rafael
This is a quaint little town
less than 3 miles to the north of the town of Heredia. Many of the
people that work in Heredia live in this town. Its most distinctive
landmark is a small gothic style church which is unusual.
Santa Barbara de Heredia
Another town close to Heredia
is Santa Barbara de Heredia. Located around the corner from San
Joacquin, the town is home to a variety of adobe style homes.
