Transportation
Subway:
"Metro"
The Metro is one of the most
modern subway systems in Latin America. All Congress activities
will be held within one block of the Metro station Baquedano,
located on Line 1 (the Red Line), which runs from San Pablo to
Escuela Militar (Military School).
Metro service runs from 6:30 AM until 10 PM during weekdays and
Saturdays, and from 8:30 AM until 10:30 PM on Sundays and holidays.
The Metro costs $350 (US$ .58 aprox.) during rush hours and $270
(US$ 0.45 aprox.) at other times, depending on the time of day.
City
Buses: "Micros"
These buses are yellow with
black numbers on their right sides and front windshields to indicate
their routes. They run throughout the city. The cost of a trip
is $310 (US$ 0.48 aprox.).
Successful bus rides require some knowledge of the city.
Intercity
Buses
There are several companies which offer bus service to all cities
throughout the country.
Buses to Valparaíso and Viña del Mar leave every
15 minutes. Bus service is quite nice and schedules are dependable.
Taxis
Taxis are distinguishable by their black bodies and yellow roofs.
All legitimate taxis have registration numbers and taxi meters.
The cost of a trip is $150 (US$ 0.25 aprox.) for the first 100
meters and $70 (US$ 0.10 aprox.) during the day and $90 (US$ 0.15
aprox.) at night, for each additional 200 meters. Smoking is prohibited
in all public transportation vehicles.
Car Rentals
Many companies lease vehicles for hours, days and weeks. The prerequisites
for rental include: posession of a valid driver´s license,
must be older than 21, and presentation of a credit card for security
deposit. Several major car rental companies offer services in
Chile.
