Argentina:
Local Religion & Language
Argentina is in large part defined by its language
and religion which strongly influences its culture. Virtually everyone
in Argentina speaks Spanish as their primary language. You will
however notice, in Buenos Aires at least, a slight Italian accent
in both the style of pronunciation and in some vocabulary.
As you move northwards out of Buenos Aires you
will hear the type of accent most typically associated with Latin
American style Spanish.
The vast majority of Argentines are of the Roman
Catholic faith. Interestingly until just a short time ago the constitution
of Argentina required the any president of the country by of the
Catholic faith. The church in Argentina can today still be regarded
as very conservative in nature, and the leadership has been slow
to adopt the ideas behind the Second Vatican Council.
Despite the position of the church itself in Argentina,
most locals are increasingly becoming more relaxed in religious
matters. While small in total numbers, Protestantism is becoming
more prominent among the working class of Argentina.
