Cordoba, Argentina:
A Brief Introduction
Cordoba
is the capital of the central province of Argentina and is one of
the oldest settlements found in South America. The city is located
around the banks of the Rio Primero. The city is an interesting
one to spend time in due to the fact that its inhabitants have preserved
much of its colonial buildings. The historic city center and surrounding
areas are perfectly set up to be explored on foot. Besides some
interesting sites of interest you will be happy to know that the
inhabitants are very friendly, all of which makes Cordoba a great
place spend time at a Spanish language school.
This beautiful city today has
a population of a little over 1 million inhabitants. Its location
is actually on the edge of a range of mountains known as the Sierra
Chicas. The name of the city itself comes from the surrounding province,
which is a particularly scenic area. The city is a great jumping
off point for excursions in to the Andes or into the scenic Pampas
area of Argentina. In the past, Cordoba was the most important city.
In the last 100 years Buenos Aires has overtaken Cordoba in terms
of importance, but still to this day, the inhabitants of this city
have retained a wonderful grace and independent spirit. You are
sure to fall in love with this city if you decide to come and learn
Spanish at our partner Spanish language school.
One of the best places to start
your exploration of Cordoba in order to see colonial building is
on the street known as Calle Obispo Trejos. In addition to some
nice colonial style houses, the main historic colonial buildings
are the churches of San Roque, the Compania de Jesus, and San Francisco.
Additionally you will encounter the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba,
which is one of the oldest universities in the Western Hemisphere.
As you move out of this area you will enter into the modern commercial
district which has many pedestrian style shopping areas.
Outside
of Cordoba there are an endless array of things to do. If you are
uncertain, check with the staff of the Spanish language school.
They are more than happy to make recommendations or help to arrange
trips for you. In the Punilla Valley and the Cuchi Corral you will
find an area known for incredible scenery and great activities like
hot air balloon rides and bungee jumping. If you like water activities,
then you are sure to enjoy San Roque Lake. There you can go wind
surfing, sailing, water skiing, etc. If you head up to the Calamuchita
Valley you will find crystal clear lakes and swiftly running rivers.
Surrounding the lakes and rivers, the mountains offer endless opportunities
for hiking, trekking, mountain biking, etc.
Whatever you decide to to, Cordoba
and the surrounding area has a little of something for everyone.
