Buenos
Aires is part of the Capital Federal District of Argentina and
today is one of the very largest metro areas in the world. Buenos
Aires is a city that takes great pride in its various cultural
establishments. While many of its older building remain, Buenos
Aires has its eye on the future and many areas of the city are
going through extensive modernization.
Throughout its history, the
center of activity within Buenos Aires seems to focus around the
Plaza de Maya. Right around the corner from the Plaza you will
find parts of the original Cabildo and the main cathedral. Towards
the western end of this area you will find the stately Congresso
building.
Within the center of Buenos
Aires popular tourist areas include the Plaza San Martin, the
theater district of Corrientes, the fashionable Santa Fe district
and the pedestrian mall areas of Lavalle and Florida. Just north
of these area is the very upscale and chic area known as the Recoleta
and the ever famous Cemeterio de la Recoleta. In the Museo Nacional
de Bellas Artes you will find works by such masters as Monet,
Van Gogh, Rodin, Renoir and other Argentine artists.
Today the Puerto Madero which
is right around the corner from the presidential palace is quickly
growing to rival the Recoleta as Buenos Aires’ most chic
neighborhood. The old warehouses and docks are being turned into
expensive nightclubs, cafes, lofts, modern offices, etc.
