
Outside Buenos Aires
Outside
of Buenos Aires there are many interesting things to see and do.
Many of these places can be reached in about an hour by train or
bus within an hour. For example a popular trip is the riverside
suburb of Tigre. From Tigre you then have the opportunity to explore
the Delta de Parana and to stop by the Isla Martin Garcia historic
park. From Tigre you can also catch one of the many ferries to take
you over to points of interest in Uruguay
During the period of the quest
for independence Isla Martin Garcia was both a penal colony and
the site of an decisive naval battle. There are variety of tours
you can take on this island.
Tigre and the Delta
In
Tigre you cannot help but notice the many beautiful mansions. Take
some time to stroll down the quaint streets or relax in one of the
parks. Of interest is the Puerto de Fruto where you will find many
different types of exotic fruits on sale. Additionally there is
a weekend crafts market that is pretty interesting.
The Rio Parana de las Palmas
forms the main channel through the delta. If you head up into the
delta you will encounter a maze of channels over 2000 km in length.
Isla Martín García
If you want to visit Martin Garcia
you can do it by heading up the beautiful channels of the delta.
The island is well known for its prison camp which over the years
has been home to 4 different Argentine presidents. Additionally
the prison is still used for prisoners who have little time left
on their terms.
Today the historic buildings
on the island are the main attraction for visitors. Upon arrival
you will see 4 old artillery emplacement along each side of the
passenger pier which used to protect the town. On old lighthouse
still overlooks a historic cluster of buildings. Stop by and visit
the Cuartel (old naval barracks), the Museo de la Isla, the Casa
de Ciencias Naturales, the old bakery, and the old theater. We are
sure you will find the island to be an interesting stop.
